These guys again?
Tonight, TFC hosts Real Salt Lake for the second time in 30 days, the third match between the two clubs in that same span. Depending on how the game goes, it could be the last meaningful match at BMO Field for the remainder of 2010.

Is the misery over, yet?
TFC dropped yet another home game on the weekend, this time to a San Jose Earthquakes squad which was — just a couple of months ago — well behind Toronto in the standings.
Now The Reds are looking up at the ‘Quakes, with the California side sitting rather comfortably in 7th place (and a full eight points ahead of Toronto).
This is all getting a little too familiar, isn’t it?

I’ll admit, I thought Toronto was going to get slaughtered on Tuesday night.
With all the goings-on that have surrounded this club over the past couple of weeks, it seemed inevitable that TFC would get crushed by Cruz Azul in Mexico. Doubly so when considering the fact that The Reds handed the Mexico City giants an embarrassing 2-1 loss at BMO Field last month in the opening game of the CONCACAF Champions League group stage.

Just when you were ready to mourn Toronto FC’s 2010 MLS season, they give you a reason to keep believing.
Following as lackluster an opening half ever displayed by the boys in red, TFC pulled a proverbial rabbit out of the hat just when it seemed like all the magic had disappeared. The head magician was once again Dwayne De Rosario, arguably the most clutch performer in league history, with his faithful assistant Stefan Frei reminding the audience that DeRo isn’t the only one with a few tricks up his sleeve.

In three seasons of visiting Houston’s Robertson Stadium, Toronto FC has been, to put it mildly, crap.
TFC has a record of 0 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw in three visits to the Dynamo’s home stadium, with a goal differential of -5. The Reds seem to reserve some of their worst performances for their trips to south Texas, the past two visits resulting in soul-crushing defeats by a much superior opponent.
Now Toronto is set to play at Robertson again, this time on the heels of a demoralizing loss in the Champions League at Salt Lake in mid-week, and (more importantly) an identity-changing front office purging that promises to change the culture of the club.

No one ever said it was going to be easy.
Toronto FC’s New Era got off to a rocky start, with the side losing 4-1 at Real Salt Lake in a match that puts serious doubt in TFC’s Champions League hopes.
The scoreline was somehow flattering to both the visitors and the hosts, as the game took on a number of vastly different forms over the 90 minutes.

So TFC v4.0 has been upgraded to TFC v4.01.
Out is Preki, who managed to wear out his welcome in Toronto in record time. Also out is Director of Soccer Mo Johnston, who, while much more personable than his coach, probably should have been gone a long time ago.
(Back) in is Nick Dasovic, the loyal assistant coach-turned-interim gaffer who seemed to be on his way out as recently as this past weekend.

Three points, please.
That’s all it comes down to now, with Toronto FC embroiled in a playoff race that will require a lot of scratching and clawing just to keep pace. Fortunately, Preki’s TFC is very good at those things.
If ever the team-first, hard-work oriented style that the coach has preached on about all season is needed, its over the next two months, a brutal stretch that will determine whether Toronto advances in either the MLS playoffs, or the CONCACAF Champions League. Or both.

So here we are in September, once again counting points and doing the math on TFC’s playoff chances.
Another 0-0 draw against an opponent that is right alongside Toronto in the race for the elusive eighth playoff spot did absolutely nothing to aid those cloudy calculations.
In an all-too-familiar scenario, The Reds once again let a very winnable game slip through their fingers, this time to host Chicago Fire. It would be fair to say that Toronto controlled the game for the most part, yet the glaring lack of quality in the final third betrayed the performance.
