No one ever said it was going to be easy.

Toronto FC’s New Era got off to a rocky start, with the side losing 4-1 at Real Salt Lake in a match that puts serious doubt in TFC’s Champions League hopes.

The scoreline was somehow flattering to both the visitors and the hosts, as the game took on a number of vastly different forms over the 90 minutes.

Whomever first uttered the old cliché “you win some, and you lose some” clearly wasn’t a soccer fan.

Toronto FC proved that last night when they advanced to the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League by way of the biggest draw in team history. Up 1-0 on aggregate heading into the match, TFC knew that a draw with C.D. Motagua of Tegucigalpa would be enough to allow the Reds to move on. Even a loss would do the trick, provided that Toronto managed to score a goal along the way and keep within one of their Honduran hosts.

That was fun.

The friendly last night between Toronto FC and England’s Bolton Wanderers was a light-hearted little distraction from the grind that is TFC’s season. And the fact that exactly zero of TFC’s regulars featured in the match, played just three days ahead of a crucial game against FC Dallas, made it that much more enjoyable.
